Mass and Dust in the Disk of a Spiral Lens Galaxy

چکیده
Gravitational lensing is a potentially important probe of spiral galaxy structure, but only a few cases of lensing by spiral galaxies are known. We present Hubble Space Telescope and Magellan observations of the two-image quasar PMN J2004–1349, revealing that the lens galaxy is a spiral galaxy. One of the quasar images passes through a spiral arm of the galaxy and suffers 3 magnitudes of V -band extinction. Using simple lens models, we show that the mass quadrupole is well-aligned with the observed galaxy disk. A more detailed model with components representing the bulge and disk gives a bulge-to-disk mass ratio of 0.16 ± 0.05. The addition of a spherical dark halo, tailored to produce an overall flat rotation curve, does not change this conclusion. The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملEffects of Disks on Gravitational Lensing by Spiral Galaxies
Gravitational lensing of a quasar by a spiral galaxy should often be accompanied by damped Lyα absorption and dust extinction due to the intervening gaseous disk. In nearly edge-on configurations, the surface mass density of the gas and stars in the disk could by itself split the quasar image and contribute significantly to the overall lensing cross section. We calculate the lensing probability...

Spiral galaxies as oblate gravitational lenses. ABSTRACT We present the relation between the density distribution of the oblate isothermal mass distribution, characterised by a rotation velocity, core radius and oblateness, and the corresponding line-of-sight (LOS) surface mass distribution. We find that a correct treatment of the inclination of an oblate mass distribution can have large conseq...
متن کاملDust in spiral disks: opacityprofiles from FIR emission and counts of distant galaxies
Dust emission in the far-infrared (FIR) characterizes the temperature and quantity of interstellar dust in a spiral disk. The three Spitzer/MIPS bands are well suited to measuring the gradient in temperature and the total optical depth in the disk of a spiral galaxy. Another way to estimate the quantity of dust in a spiral disk is the ”Synthetic Field Method” (SFM, González et al. (1998)), whic...
متن کاملGravitomagnetic corrections to the lensing deflection angle for spiral galaxy models
We investigate the effects of the gravitomagnetic corrections to the usual gravitational lens quantities for a specific lensing mass distribution modelled after spiral galaxies. An exponential disk is embedded into two different spherical halo models where disk and haloes parameters are fixed according to the observed mass to light ratios, galaxy magnitudes and rotation curves. The general expr...
